MEDIA WASTE: Dirty Art, Trash TV, and DIGITAL RUBBISH

(Graduate COURSE)

This course draws on a diverse selection of theoretical and critical writings on garbage, materiality, excess, kitsch, and aesthetics to interrogate the interrelations between contemporary media and waste. Themes include dirty art, trash TV, toxic media, digital rubbish, cultures of disposability and re-use, and the spectacularization on waste. The course seeks to connect these themes to broader concerns in media and cultural studies with issues of sustainability, consumerism, and technological obsolescence.
